Benidorm carries out a study to verify the stability of the slope in the Tossal of La Cala after the last rains

05 May 2017
Benidorm realiza un estudio para comprobar la estabilidad del talud del Tossal de La Cala tras las últimas lluvias

In addition to tastings, the specialized company will do a laser scan to determine possible risks

Benidorm City Hall, through a specialized company, is carrying out a study to verify the stability of the slope of El Tossal de La Cala after the episodes of heavy rains registered in the last months, that caused landslides in near Luarca and Ermita streets.

The councilor for Urban Planning, Lourdes Caselles, explained that "we have contracted this study after the images taken by the dron of the Local Police and the municipal technicians of Architecture and Engineering have verified that there is a risk of new stone shedding ". Caselles has indicated that the same technicians are the ones who have recommended that this study be carried out by a company specialized in geotechnics.

The objective of this study is to establish in which points and areas there are unstable rocks, what is the level of actual danger and what actions are necessary to avoid future collapses that may affect the public road and houses located near the slope " .

The company Secoingeo Servicios Tecnicos has already started to work in the area. In addition to tastings, a "3D laser scanning" will be carried out that will allow a detailed layering of the slope and determine possible risks.

The last performance in this area was made 9 years ago, in June 2008, and also following torrential rains. At that time, the Provincial Bureau of Coasts sewed the most unstable rocks with galvanized wire mesh and placed a dynamic screen and bolts to ensure the stability of the slope, which had been compromised by rainfall.

The contracting of this study has resulted in an expense of 5,747.50 euros and its results will be transferred to the Provincial Department of Coasts, since the area is within its scope of protection.
