Benidorm begins work to improve the park-and-ride parking on Avenida Beniardá
The project is included in the Sustainable Tourism Plan for Destinations 'Benidorm Visión 360', has an implementation budget of 1,548,717.93 euros and will be completed in eight months
The project includes regulating vehicle entry and exit, implementing a counting system, and installing public lighting and surveillance systems.
Benidorm City Council has begun work on the "Sustainable Urban Drainage System for the Implementation of Park-and-Ride Parking on the Moralet Municipal Plot." This involves the improvement and refurbishment of the park-and-ride parking on Avenida Beniardá, located next to the TRAM station, and is included in the Sustainable Tourism Plan, Action 13 "Benidorm Visión 360." The project is 100% funded by NextGenerationEU funds, associated with the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan within the Sustainable Tourism Destination Plan.
The budget for this project amounts to €1,548,717.93 and has an eight-month execution period, according to the project awarded to the company MOA. The work will cover an area of approximately 17,244 square meters and a parking area of 15,018 square meters.
The area to be renovated is a large esplanade that has changed over the years to make it more accessible. However, it currently lacks a functional layout and only has two access points, both serving pedestrian traffic, both from Avenida Beniardá. This esplanade is currently used as a park-and-ride parking lot, but the interior layout is defined solely by the existing vegetation and the morphology of the terrain.
Mayor Toni Pérez, who visited the area this morning accompanied by the Councilor for Public Space, Francis Muñoz, and the project managers, stated that "we continue to invest in such an important issue for this local government as improving the provision of free public parking, in this case with a project for which we secured European funding and which will greatly improve this space."
He also stated that "the entire design will be based on sustainability criteria, implementing buffer barriers and landscape regeneration areas to mitigate the effects of the works on El Moralet Park." This project, he said, "is part of the general sustainable mobility strategies we have been implementing since 2015 in Benidorm" and that "will promote the use of public transport and bicycles as a means of internal transport in the city."
This project aims to provide organisation and control to a plot of land used by many vehicles belonging to residents and visitors, acting as a deterrent and significantly reducing the number of vehicles travelling through the city, especially in the immediate urban area. In this regard, the project considers the adaptation and regularisation of part of the current esplanade by adjusting the slopes and designing sustainable drainage systems for water drainage. The project includes the use of sustainable materials that promote the environmental and landscape integration of the parking lot into the surroundings of El Moralet Park.
The paving of the site includes traffic lanes, parking spaces, green areas, a pedestrian walkway over green areas, a landscape regeneration area, and a pedestrian zone for people with reduced mobility. The project also includes the installation of an electrical grid, public lighting, and sustainable drainage, irrigation, street furniture, an access control system, vehicle counting, and the implementation of signage, protection elements, and beacons. The project stipulates that the parking area will have a capacity for approximately 500 vehicles, with spaces for disabled access and family vehicles.
The execution of the works will not prevent users from continuing to park their vehicles, although nearby areas will be gradually opened to accommodate this purpose without reducing the number of spaces compared to the current ones.
