Benidorm will allocate 8,000 euros to help the victims of the earthquake in Colombia

Benidorm City Council will allocate €8,000 to help the victims of the earthquake that struck Colombia yesterday, Monday, August 10, leaving, according to the latest provisional official figures, more than 130 people dead.

This morning the Spokespersons’ Committee endorsed a proposal put forward by Mayor Toni Pérez to provide aid to the victims, with the amount set at €8,000.

The City Council will also convey its institutional solidarity and support to the Government of the Republic of Colombia, the Colombian Embassy in Spain, and the Mayor’s Office of Manizales, a city twinned with Benidorm with which it has maintained close ties for years. Likewise, Benidorm will join any commemorative events that may be proposed by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).

This morning, the Mayor of Benidorm expressed his “deep sadness” over the “catastrophe” that has affected Colombia and the city of Manizales. “We have already conveyed our condolences, and the Spokespersons’ Committee unanimously approved a motion that includes a financial contribution of €8,000 to help the people of Colombia and Manizales. ‘Part of our hearts is there,’” Pérez said.

Benidorm’s contribution will be channelled through the cooperation and international aid mechanisms established by the FEMP, the Valencian Regional Government, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), or other humanitarian aid institutions or organisations that can demonstrate that they are operating in the affected areas.

“Benidorm has always demonstrated its commitment to international solidarity and to communities experiencing situations of extreme need,” the mayor said.
