Javier Jordá: “The PSOE is raising the athletics track issue now because we have today taken possession of the site, which is ready for the project to get underway”

Benidorm City Council’s Sports Councillor, Javier Jordá, today criticised what he described as the “lack of seriousness” of the main opposition group, the Socialist Party (PSOE), for “once again trying to mislead the public with claims that have little or nothing to do with reality”.

Jordá was referring to a statement issued by PSOE deputy spokesperson Sergi Castillo, calling for the immediate tendering of the new athletics track. In response, the councillor said that “the Socialists are raising this issue today as an opportunistic move, despite knowing that today the site, which has already been prepared for the project to begin, has officially been handed over to the City Council”.

“As is so often the case, the PSOE is once again speaking without knowing the facts,” the councillor said. He also pointed out that “they know, as do many residents who have been in the area in recent days, that work has been taking place on the site and that now, with the land officially handed over and prepared to meet the technical requirements, we can move on to the next steps towards delivering the project”.

Jordá explained that municipal technical staff from the Sports, Urban Planning and Procurement departments have been “working for weeks on the technical and administrative tender documents needed to put the project design out to tender, ahead of the subsequent tendering of the construction works”. He stressed that this stage, “like every other stage of the process, will be carried out in strict compliance with the legal deadlines”.

“The clearest evidence of the Popular Party government’s political commitment to delivering this project is the fact that, as the PSOE itself acknowledges in its statement, €180,000 has already been included in the 2026 municipal budget, approved last June, for the preparation of the project design,” the councillor said.

He added: “That is why we cannot understand why, now that the site has been officially handed over, knowing that municipal technical staff are preparing the tender documents and that funding is already in place, the opposition is once again trying to cast doubt on the athletics track.”

“We do not expect the PSOE to cooperate with or support any project promoted by this government that benefits Benidorm and its residents. But at the very least, we ask them to stop putting obstacles in the way and deliberately misleading the public,” he added.

Javier Jordá concluded by reassuring residents, and particularly local athletes, that “there should be no doubt that the athletics track will be built, and that it will be delivered by this government, which has been working on this project from day o
