Benidorm to renew the pavement on Rioja Street and add new trees, an Espai d’Art and universal accessibility

Benidorm City Council has begun works on Rioja Street to renew the pavement. The project will also include new trees, a municipal Espai d’Art and universal accessibility features. The works are being carried out by the City Council’s technical services, with the involvement of the Departments of Urban Scene, Historical and Cultural Heritage, and Parks and Gardens. The works are expected to take approximately two weeks, according to Councillor for Urban Scene Francis Muñoz.
The works began at the start of this week to provide “a new pavement for a street with heavy pedestrian traffic, as it connects the l’Aigüera area with El Calvari neighbourhood.” Muñoz explained that “we are going to improve accessibility, while also enhancing the public realm through better paving, lighting and street furniture.” The new pavement will be tactile paving “to facilitate movement for people with visual impairments, as has already been done on other pavements and streets throughout the city.”
As part of the improvements to the street’s appearance, the councillor explained that four mulberry trees will be planted, each surrounded by large artificial-grass tree pits, “to implement a renaturalisation project on the street and provide users with a greener and more pleasant environment.” The works will also include the installation of a new municipal Espai d’Art, similar to the one already located at Glorieta de Carrascos, which will host a variety of exhibitions and displays.
The project, being carried out by a City Council technical services team, will require some temporary restrictions on pedestrian access, “although residents will be able to access their buildings at all times,” Muñoz stressed. He also explained that the works “will cover the entire surface of the street” and that the new pavement will feature a new colour finish and “an anti-slip coating to prevent possible slips during rainy periods or on days when humidity levels are particularly high.”
