Education opens applications for university transport service to San Vicente and Sant Joan campuses
The City Council once again subsidises one third of the travel costs for students registered as residents in Benidorm
An average of 345 students used this transport service during the 2025–2026 academic year
Benidorm City Council, through its Department of Education, opened applications on Tuesday, September 1, for the city’s university transport service, allowing students to travel to the University of Alicante (UA) campus in San Vicente del Raspeig and the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) campus in Sant Joan d’Alacant.
Known as the UNIBUS service, the initiative aims to provide university students with a convenient and organised transport option for their daily journeys to and from campus. Students registered as residents of Benidorm are eligible for a subsidy towards the cost of their travel.
According to Benidorm’s Councillor for Education, Maite Moreno, the service is designed “to provide this group of students with an organised means of transport to make their journeys to university easier, while offering financial support to students who are registered as residents of Benidorm. This also helps reduce the cost that students and their families have to cover for these journeys.”
The City Council subsidises 33.34% of the cost of each journey for students registered as Benidorm residents, with users paying the remaining 66.66%.
The UNIBUS service is also open to university staff working at the participating campuses, as well as students enrolled in vocational training courses that are not available in Benidorm. Non-resident students can also register for the service, although they are not eligible for the subsidy.
The initiative forms part of Benidorm City Council’s commitment to supporting local students and making access to higher education more affordable and accessible.
Those interested in using this university transport service can register and pay the corresponding fee starting today through the website unibusbenidorm.com. Once the first payment has been made, the service application must be submitted through the City Council's Electronic Office (http://sede.benidorm.org), by accessing the Services Catalogue, Education, and selecting "Application for individual grants for university transport." For this process, the completed and signed application form, along with photocopies of the applicant's ID, proof of enrollment, and payment transfer receipt, must be submitted in both scanned and PDF format.
As in previous years, there will be three phases for using the university transport service: from September 7 to October 8, from October 13 to January 22, 2027, and from January 26 to June 13. Each phase will have its corresponding payment schedule, as established in the service terms and conditions.
As in previous years, priority for using this transport will be given to students registered as residents of Benidorm before June 1, 2026. The second priority group consists of those registered as residents of Benidorm who work at the San Vicente del Raspeig or Sant Joan d’Alacant campuses, as well as students enrolled in degree programs or vocational training modules in specialities not offered in Benidorm, for whom the UNIBUS service is convenient in terms of schedules and stops. The third and final group comprises students or workers from neighbouring towns, not registered as residents of Benidorm, who can also use the service; in this case, without the discount offered by the Benidorm City Council.
According to data provided by the Councillor for Education, “an average of 345 people used this service during the 2025/2026 school year, the vast majority of whom were registered residents of Benidorm,” which, in the Councillor's opinion, “confirms the smooth operation of this service and its great popularity among users.”
Regarding the bus stops, there are a total of eleven located at different points throughout the city: Trinquet ‘Vicente Pérez Devesa’, Severo Ochoa Avenue, next to the Lope de Vega school; Ametlla del Mar, opposite Mercaloix; Mediterráneo Avenue 23; Europa Avenue 16; Alfonso Puchades Avenue, next to the Nuevo Nevada cafeteria and the Economy Cash supermarket; Jaime I Avenue, next to Burger King; Ricardo Bayona Street, next to the Cuatro Soles supermarket; and Vicente Pérez Devesa Avenue, near the IES Mediterrànea bus stop and Benissa Avenue, opposite the health centre, from where the bus travels directly to both campuses. First, it goes to the UA campus, where it makes three more stops: Building II, Sports Centre, and Law School; and then to the UMH campus.
In total, eight outbound routes are scheduled from Benidorm, between 6:28 a.m. and 2:28 p.m.; and nine return routes from the campuses, with schedules ranging from 12:10 p.m. to 9:10 p.m.
Moreno pointed out that “through UNIBUS, we make it easier for university students in Benidorm who study at both universities, as well as those who work on these campuses or are studying vocational training nearby, to travel by public transport; with a wide range of schedules and stop locations; and also at a more economical cost than if they had to travel by private vehicle or on buses on their own.”
