Servigroup Benidorm aims to “take another step forward” in its second year in the Men’s Volleyball Super League
Mayor pledges the city’s support for the team as it bids to reach the Copa del Rey and title playoffs for the first time
Benidorm Mayor Toni Pérez and Councillor for Sports Javier Jordá visited Servigroup Benidorm on Thursday during one of the team’s pre-season training sessions at the Palau d’Esports l’Illa de Benidorm. The team has begun preparations for its second consecutive season in the Men’s Volleyball Super League (SMV), having secured its place in the top flight in its debut season.
Toni Pérez conveyed the city’s support to the Benidorm-based team and encouraged them to continue building on their progress following what he described as a “very good” first campaign. “I hope,” the mayor said, “that we can repeat that performance and, if we can take another small step forward this season, all the better.”
Accompanied by Club Voleibol Playas de Benidorm president Mario Rodríguez and members of the club’s board, Toni Pérez also highlighted the stature the organisation and its first team have achieved, describing them as “a benchmark for sport in Benidorm.”
Aiming Higher in Season Two
With their place in the top flight already secured, Servigroup Benidorm enters its second season with more ambitious sporting objectives. Qualifying for the Copa del Rey will be among their goals after successfully avoiding relegation last season.
The team, coached by Matías Guidolin, will also aim to finish among the sides that qualify for the playoffs, the Super League championship round that will determine the competition’s overall champion.
To achieve these objectives, the club has retained much of the squad that secured survival and has added five new players: opposites John Obi and Samy Soto; outside hitter Nahuel Rojas; and middle blockers Sergio Soria and Jekabs Dzenis. The latter will join the team after representing Latvia at the European Championship.
